EPK bio · from Lee Winright's artist profile
Lee Winright is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and harmonica player based in Bandera, Texas.
His music draws from Americana, blues, country, and rock, reflecting the long-standing musical traditions of the Texas Hill Country.
Music has been part of his family for generations. A 1935 photograph of his relatives shows nearly every person holding a banjo or guitar or seated at a piano. Winright is the only one among them still performing. He began working on the road as a teenager, taking a job with Robert Earl Keen that included driving, running sound, and serving as guitar technician. That early experience taught him the practical side of touring and kept him moving from town to town for years.
Over time he has worked with a range of established Texas and national acts. Credits include The Chicks, Jack Ingram, Charlie Robison, John Hiatt, Kelly Willis, Bruce Robison, and Robyn Ludwick. He has opened for or shared bills with James McMurtry, Stoney LaRue, the McKay Brothers, Ronnie Milsap, and Cowboy Mouth. He has also played guitar with Charlie Robison in front of crowds larger than 50,000.
Winright’s songwriting covers traditional country material such as “Muddy River,” rockabilly-leaning numbers like “Texas Tornado,” and quieter narrative songs including “Brooklyn, Michigan.” His debut album, Nobody Saw It Coming, received regional airplay and a “Texas Rising Star” profile. Later singles—“I Wish It Would Rain,” “She Had to Go,” “Flood Song,” and “Broken Down”—continue in the same direct, unpolished style. He has described himself as simply amazed that he wrote the songs at all.
He still performs regularly across central and south Texas. Recent and ongoing appearances include Ace Wine Room and Kickback Korner in Bandera, Trailhead Beer Garden in Kerrville, The Rustic in Houston, and the Continental Club in Austin, where he has shared late-night bills with James McMurtry. Whether working alone with acoustic guitar and harmonica or with a full band that includes pedal steel, keyboards, bass, and drums, Winright maintains a steady schedule of live dates that keep him connected to the audiences and venues that have supported him for years. He continues to write and record while remaining a consistent presence on the Texas circuit.
